What we do

One mission. Three capabilities.

The LTACH Leadership Institute exists to advance the science, practice, and profession of leadership for the chronically critically ill through research, education, certification, and the development of an authoritative body of knowledge for the field.

Professional Credentialing

The CLLP™, Certified LTACH Leadership Professional, is the first certification built exclusively for LTACH hospital leaders. One examination. One standard. A career-long credential that travels with you.

Learn about the CLLP™

Leadership Education

Continuing education programs, live intensives, and structured curriculum designed specifically for the leadership of chronically critically ill patients, not adapted from acute care, not recycled from nursing home administration. Built from the ground up by practitioners who have led this care, for leaders across every setting where these patients are found.

Industry Standards

Through the CLLP Credentialing Board and our Job Task Analysis research, we define what LTACH leadership excellence looks like, and we make that definition the basis for the credential that certifies it.

About our governance

FOR HEALTH SYSTEMS AND LTACH OPERATORS

Built once, for a sector that cannot each build it alone.

01

Every organization caring for the chronically critically ill answers to the same Conditions of Participation, the same payment rules, the same quality reporting program, and the same clinical complexity. What differs is how many hospitals each one can spread the cost of a leadership curriculum, a competency framework, and a continuing education infrastructure across.

02

A national operator can maintain centralized specialists in education, regulatory affairs, reimbursement, and quality, and amortize them across a large portfolio. A three-hospital operator has identical obligations and no way to reproduce that internally. A single hospital inside a large health system may have excellent general education resources and nothing addressed to this population at all.

03

Defining what competent leadership of this care requires is work that only has to be done once. The Institute does it once, independently, and makes the result available to the whole sector rather than to whoever can afford to build it in house.

Verify what you already build.

For operators with mature internal development, an external standard your own programs cannot issue.

Cover what you did not fund.

For organizations that built some of it, a standard for the rest.

Access what you could not build.

For small chains and independents, an LTACH leadership standard no organization your size could economically produce.

FOR INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONALS

Your expertise. Our standard.

THE ENVIRONMENT

The knowledge required to lead a traditional short-term acute care hospital provides an important foundation, but LTACH leadership demands an entirely different depth of specialized knowledge, judgment, and executive skill. You manage ventilator-dependent and medically complex patients whose care may extend for weeks or months, lead clinical teams through prolonged and highly complex courses of treatment, navigate a specialized regulatory and reimbursement environment, and balance extraordinary clinical demands with significant operational and financial pressures.

THE INTERDEPENDENCE

Equally essential is the ability to understand, control, and continuously adjust the dynamic interdependence of every major hospital function, recognizing that decisions involving clinical operations, staffing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, quality, compliance, case management, admissions, utilization, reimbursement, and finance do not occur in isolation.

Each decision can create immediate consequences across the organization, requiring the LTACH leader to anticipate those effects, recalibrate resources and priorities, and maintain alignment among competing clinical, operational, regulatory, and financial demands.

THE MASTERY

LTACH leadership therefore requires far more than knowing how a hospital functions; it requires mastery of how an exceptionally complex hospital system functions as an interconnected whole, and the ability to continuously balance and realign that system to protect patient outcomes, regulatory compliance, operational performance, and financial sustainability.

Job postings for LTACH leadership roles screen for years in the role and years in the setting. The CLLP screens for what a leader actually knows: an examined credential that verifies that knowledge directly, across all eight competency domains, independent of which employer you work for today. It travels with you. It works whether you lead in an LTACH, a ventilator weaning unit, a complex SNF pulmonary program, an IRF serving medically complex patients, or a hospital at home program built for the same patients.

The Credential

The CLLP™ — the only credential built exclusively for LTACH leaders.

The CLLP™ is a single national certification. One examination against one standard, attesting that a leader is prepared to run a Long-Term Acute Care Hospital.

CLLPCertified LTACH Leadership Professional

One examination. Eight competency domains. One standard.

The CLLP™ is awarded by the independent CLLP Credentialing Board and administered by the LTACH Leadership Institute.

For Physicians

Clinical authority, verified for the executive suite.

Physicians bring the deepest clinical command of the chronically critically ill. The CLLP™ examines the rest of what leading the hospital requires, regulatory, financial, operational, and human, against the same standard every candidate meets.
