About the LTACH Leadership Institute

The organization behind the standard.

The LTACH Leadership Institute, LLC is an independent professional credentialing and education organization dedicated exclusively to the LTACH sector. We develop the standards, credentials, and educational programs that LTACH leaders need to lead well — and that the organizations employing them need to trust they will.

The LTACH Leadership Institute exists to organize, advance, preserve, and disseminate the body of knowledge required to lead Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals with excellence. We believe that leadership in an LTACH is a distinct professional discipline requiring competencies that extend beyond general hospital administration.

Effective LTACH leadership demands an understanding of complex clinical operations, Medicare reimbursement, regulatory compliance, interdisciplinary care, finance, quality improvement, technology, workforce development, and strategic decision-making within one of healthcare's most specialized environments.

For too long, that knowledge has remained fragmented — distributed across regulations, journal articles, operational experience, and the expertise of individual leaders. The LTACH Leadership Institute exists to bring those pieces together into a coherent, evidence-informed framework that can be taught, studied, applied, and continually refined.

Our Mission

To redefine the future of Long‑Term Acute Care hospital leadership by establishing a rigorous, field-defining competency architecture that elevates patient outcomes, drives high‑reliability operational excellence, and forges a continuously advancing professional leadership class across the US LTACH continuum.

Our Vision

A US Long‑Term Acute Care hospital sector in which every facility is led by a formally credentialed, continuously advancing professional, and in which that credential stands as the recognized standard for leading complex medical‑care environments.

Why We Build

We do not adapt. We build.

The LTACH sector has a quiet but persistent problem: no one built a leadership credential for it. Executives working in high-acuity, long-stay environments — where medically fragile patients require extended hospital-level care, aggressive goal-directed intervention, and management of complex comorbidities and multi-organ complications — have had to make do with credentials designed for different settings, different patient populations, and different regulatory frameworks.

The LTACH Leadership Institute is the first serious answer to that gap. Its curriculum is anchored in a formal Job Task Analysis of LTACH leadership practice — a systematic study of what LTACH leaders actually do, the decisions they own, and the competencies those decisions demand. That practice analysis was developed and validated through a deliberate collaboration: decades of collective LTACH operational experience, MBA-level expertise in finance and technology management, doctoral-level grounding in psychometrics and adult education and higher learning science. Every competency domain traces directly to the findings of that analysis — each one constructed from documented evidence of the operational, regulatory, financial, and clinical realities unique to the LTACH environment, not from assumption or borrowed frameworks built for other settings.

Every competency domain traces directly to the findings of that analysis — shaped by the operational, regulatory, financial, and clinical realities unique to the LTACH environment.

The CLLP™ Credentialing Board is composed of active LTACH leaders and professionals with substantive, previously held LTACH executive roles — individuals who have operated these facilities, managed federal and state survey exposure, and sat in the boardrooms where consequential strategic decisions are made. They are not academics. They are not managers imported from adjacent healthcare sectors. This governance structure produces a credential in which every case study and every examination item is anchored in the realities of LTACH leadership: at the bedside, through the survey process, and at the executive table.

Our Approach

Our Approach

I
§1

Practitioner-Designed

Everything we develop is designed with — not for — LTACH practitioners. Our Credentialing Board, our Job Task Analysis panels, and our curriculum advisory groups are composed of active LTACH leaders and recently retired LTACH executives who bring both current operational knowledge and the deeper perspective that comes from having seen the full arc of careers in this setting. Academic rigor without operational relevance is not rigor — it is theory. We build both.

II
§2

Learning-Science Grounded

Our founder holds a doctorate in adult education and higher learning. That is not a credential we display for prestige — it is the scientific foundation of how we design learning experiences. Adult professionals learn differently than students. Working healthcare professionals learn differently than full-time graduate students. Every CLLP curriculum decision reflects that andragogical understanding.

III
§3

Institutionally Credible

Professional credentials derive their legitimacy from governance — not from government licenses or accreditation stamps. The CLLP Credentialing Board holds independent certifying authority grounded in its governance structure, its published standards, its psychometrically validated examination, and the professional standing of the practitioners who comprise it. This is how respected professional certification works. That authority exists now — it is structural, not aspirational, and it does not depend on any external body to activate it.

Governance

Independent governance. Active practitioners. Real accountability.

The CLLP Credentialing Board is the independent governing body responsible for certification standards, examination validity, and policy decisions. Board members — active LTACH practitioners and individuals with prior LTACH executive experience who now serve in leadership roles across other healthcare settings — serve in a voluntary capacity without compensation from the Institute. The Board must maintain a majority of currently active practitioners at all times.

The Board's independence from the Institute's commercial operations is structural, not aspirational. Board members are prohibited from serving in a commercial role with the Institute while on the Board. Their authority over certification standards is absolute — and separate from the Institute's educational and business activities.

Founding Credentialing Board members will be announced at LTACHLeadershipInstitute.org and CLLPcertification.org in 2026. Inquiries about board service may be directed to board@CLLPcertification.org.

Certifying Framework

A formally constituted, independently governed certification program.

The CLLP™ Credentialing Board holds full, independent certifying authority over this program. It sets the standards candidates must meet, validates the examination that measures competency against them, and awards the designation to those who qualify. That authority exists now — it is structural, not aspirational, and it does not depend on any external body to activate it.

I
§4.2

Independent Certification Authority

The CLLP™ Credentialing Board serves as the independent certification authority for the program, exercising exclusive and non-delegable jurisdiction over all certification functions — the establishment of standards, the validation of competencies, the development and psychometric maintenance of the certification examination, and the issuance, suspension, and revocation of credentials.

II
§8.2

Evidence-Based Competency Framework

The CLLP™ competency framework is grounded in a formally validated Job Task Analysis of LTACH leadership practice, ensuring that all domains, performance expectations, and assessment targets are grounded in documented evidence of professional practice. The certification standards are demonstrably linked to the actual knowledge, skills, and judgments required for competent performance in the field.

III
§§9.1–9.6

Psychometrically Defensible Examination

The examination system is developed, maintained, and periodically evaluated in accordance with professional testing and psychometric specifications. Development processes incorporate item-writing protocols, technical review, content validation, security controls, and ongoing psychometric monitoring — reflecting the quality-assurance expectations applied to high-stakes certification programs across the U.S. credentialing landscape.

IV
§4.3

Transparency & Public Accountability

Transparency and public accountability are core elements of the program's regulatory design. All governing policies, eligibility requirements, examination procedures, and candidate obligations are published and publicly accessible, supporting fairness, impartiality, and stakeholder confidence.
